Acne is the term for blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Acne is a chronic, frustrating condition but very treatable. Seventeen million Americans currently have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. Acne tends to run in families and can be triggered by various reasons such as hormonal changes, stress and/or comedogenic cosmetic products.
There are a number of treatments and products that will treat acne. The most common products include benzoyl peroxide, sulfur or salicylic acid, which work by killing bacteria, drying up the oil and exfoliating the skin cells.
