Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles. When it occurs superficially in the hair, the rash presents as small pustules with some surrounding redness. When the folliculitis involves a deeper portion of the hair, a more swollen, raised, tender area can be noticed. This is sometimes then referred to as a furuncle. Pseudofolliculitis is a condition where short hairs get trapped under the skin, triggering inflammation. Pseudofolliculitis is common in the beard region due to shaving.
