Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles. When it occurs superficially in the hair, the rash presents as small pustules with some surrounding redness. When the folliculitis involves a deeper portion of the hair, a more swollen, raised, tender area can be noticed. This is sometimes then referred to as a furuncle. Pseudofolliculitis is also known as acne keloidalis. This is a foreign body reaction of the hair follicles, particularly in African-American males and can lead to scarring. Pseudofolliculitis can also occur in the beard region due to shaving in all skin types.
