Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis is a skin eruption which involves the lower legs. It is due to poor vein circulation in the legs.  Because of a back up of fluid brought on by varicose veins, the pressure causes the skin to change and develop pigmentation and ultimately cause inflammation of the skin. It is characterized by itching, redness, and sometimes swelling and oozing of the skin with discoloration. Patients with stasis dermatitis are very susceptible to developing allergic rashes due to a variety of things placed on the inflamed skin.
