Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a complex disease which is caused by skin cells dividing quickly, resulting in thickening and scaling. This is a genetic condition, with 50% of patients experiencing psoriasis before the age of 20. Psoriasis has many presentations but typically occurs with reddish scaly plaques on the elbows, knees, buttocks, and scalp. However, the total body can be involved, including palms and soles. Nails are also involved and are characterized by pitting. The goal of therapy is to control psoriasis as there is no cure for this condition. Weight loss and alcohol restriction as well as stress control are key features in bringing psoriasis under control.
