Rosacea

Rosacea is a complex inflammatory condition characterized by a hereditary tendency for flushing and blushing of the central face of the skin.  In its earliest stages, simple redness and blood vessel changes are the only sign. Occasionally it can present with small papules or pustules on the nose and cheeks and can sometimes involve the eyes.  Like acne, rosacea is chronic and can be frustrating—but our team at Sand Lake Dermatology Center is here to help. Using a combination approach of prescription medications, special sunscreens and optional laser and light treatments, we will work with you to attain the results you desire. Daily attention to your skin as well as your skin care routine are critical to successful treatment and we will show you how to take excellent care of your skin.

Rosacea Treatments at Sand Lake Dermatology:

Prescription Medications

Prescription medications can be important in your rosacea regimen but knowing how to use them and in what combination is critical. Prescription medications include once-daily ORACEA, a unique formulation of doxycycline that helps break the cycle of inflammation associated with rosacea or topical treatments such as Metrogel or Finacea.

Most medications are covered by prescription health plans.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL photorejuvenation can be very effective in combating the redness that is common in rosacea patients. IPL is an easy, non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime. A series of 3-5 treatments administered monthly is usually recommended for best results.

Non-Prescription Products

Although rosacea is a medical condition, it has cosmetic consequences and there are several very effective products on the market that do not require a prescription. A good daily skin care routine is critical for rosacea patients. This should include a gentle cleanser, moisturizer to restore and maintain the skin barrier and the use of an anti-inflammatory product and sunblock. Some of our favorite non-prescription products for facial redness are SkinMedica Redness Relief CalmPlex, Replenix Serum and CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion.

Sunblock

When it comes to rosacea, sun protection is absolutely crucial. Sunblock alone can significantly improve rosacea symptoms. Sunblock should be applied every morning, even if you don’t think you are going outdoors. Because rosacea patients generally have sensitive skin, a sunblock without irritating chemical ingredients is usually the best option. Some of our favorites are Vanicream SPF 60 for sensitive skin, Tizo Facial Mineral Fusion SPF 40 and Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 for skin types prone to acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation.
