Sun Spots

Sun spots, technically known as solar lentigo, are well-defined, uniformly colored brown spots which occur in sun-exposed areas such as the hands, face, neck and chest.  These spots are caused by chronic sun exposure over time. Therefore, older individuals with more cumulative sun exposure are more likely to have these. Age spots sometimes become more raised and crusty. Treatment of age spots is considered cosmetic in nature.  Excellent treatments include retinols, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, Intense Pulsed Light therapy as well as YAG laser treatments. With adequate sun protection early in life the risk of age spots appearing is reduced.
